Three day weekends rock. . . so far

Thank goodness for three-day weekends! Cynical and I both had today off. We had originally planned some travel, but given our last week, we thought it might be nice to spend some time closer to home. I do, however, wish we could have ventured north and visited with dear friends and family. I hope they know they are in our thoughts and we’re wishing them fireworks and icecream.

As for the first day of our long weekend, we spent it doing a little shopping nearby. I felt a bit like Laura Ingalls going to town for supplies. Seems I was out of lots of necessities, the sorts that our town doesn’t seem to have available. We ate lunch, grabbed the stuff and made our way home.

In other news, Needlefingers and I have just wrapped up Round 2 of our Sock Yarn Un-Club. You might recall it’s where we rotate selecting a sock yarn from an Indie dyer. The “un-club” is our way of trying out some yarns we’d been wanting to check out, but hadn’t yet. I chose Black Bunny Fibers and ordered Birches from the Loopy Ewe. Pretty, pretty stuff. (You might remember our first installment was from Knitting Notions, Needlefingers’ excellent pick, and I bought two skeins. One was a bamboo blend, the other merino.)

I also finished some socks. Actually I completed them before I did the Hemlock Ring Blanket. I just hadn’t taken the time to photograph them. I must admit that I truly love Austermann Step yarn. So nice to knit with and the aloe in it makes all the difference in the world! Since it was self-striping yarn, I just knit them. They might seem familiar, as I knitted this same pair in an aqua/turquoise, charcoal and gray color scheme. Loved them so much I knit them in my high school and college colors: red, black and gray. Details are on the Finished Projects page.

Photo above: I noticed this field of Queen Anne’s Lace, Black Eyed Susans and Sweet Clover whenever we arrived at Cynical’s parents’ home on Saturday. When we returned on Sunday, I had my camera in hand. So beautiful against the blue sky and white clouds. When we drove past it on Monday, the entire field had been mowed. All of the flowers were gone, left was a sweet, sweet smell, which to me is the smell of summer: a freshly mowed field.
